Authentic Kotpad Handloom Saree (Brick Red With White & Yellow Border)

The handloom gives very auspicious vibes with the colors. The colors are brown, yellow and off-white which tells the auspicious celebrations of the households. The brown colors on the middle and the major portion of the saree gives a very humble and homely feeling. The part has little motifs all over and linear interwoven work giving it a structure. The borders are of different colours telling different stories of haldi (yellow) and chandan (off-white) in the auspicious celebrations. All together this piece is a beautiful, elegant and aesthetic saree to be a part of these auspiciousness.

Kotpad sarees are made by the Mirgan community of Kotpad town of Koraput.. The dyeing process of the saree is captivating and the dyeing and drying of these Kotpad saree done twice to thrice to get a darker and bolder shade.. The colors of dye are usually from roots of AAL trees and vegetables. The borders are made by interlocking threads and creating patterns of conch, boat, fish, temple and many patterns and structures. The borders of the sarees are bold and attractive with a dual tone. This living relic of Odisha requires about a month to be this gorgeous and worthy.

Origin of Kotpad Handloom Saree :

The handloom of Kotpad is titled on the basis of the village called Kotpad in Koraput District of Odisha. These handlooms are vegetable dyed-fabrics woven by the Mirgan Community of the Kotpad village.

The speciality of these sarees lies in the fact that it has been prepared out of natural resources which are not at all toxic & harmful and hence it is beneficial for the skin. The natural dye is produced from the Aul tree grown in this area.  

The motifs woven on the body and anchal (pallu) somehow reflects the culture of that area. These motifs are woven by the intricate extra weft technique.

GI Tag :

Kotpad Handlooms were the first handlooms to get a GI (geographical Indication tag) from Odisha in the year 2005.
