The pasapalli is one of the proud drapes of Odisha. The handloom saree’s design is inspired by the gambling game or famously known as ‘Pasa,’ which means the chessboard. These sarees contain intricate checkered patterns of distinctive colors that resemble the chessboard or PASA.
This particular pasapalli saree is from Barpali, a small town in the Bargarh District. The big squared red and white pasapalli design and the small black and white square checkered boxes give it a very look. The Anchal of the saree has interacted motifs describing tribal life of the villages in Odisha. The farming culture of Odisha is well described here as it showcases regular rural life, such as climbing coconut trees, animals and trees, their houses, and many more.
