Pattachitra Paintings are one of the most famous and oldest art forms of Odisha. The name "Pattachitra" comes from the Sanskrit word Patta which stands for canvas or chitra. It is a painting done on canvas with rich and colourful motifs and designs. These paintings showcase simple themes, mostly mythological characters.
Kandarpa Ashwa depicts Lord Krishna playing the flute on a horse (Ahswa). The horse is made of the Gopis or the Milk Maidens. It is believed that the Gopis were sages in their past life and prayed to Lord Vishnu to be reincarnated in their next life to serve him. They were given the blessing to be born as Gopis, and this piece of art depicts the selfless, pure and immeasurable love between the Gopis and Lord Krishna.
