Pattachitra Paintings are one of the most famous and oldest art forms of Odisha. The name "Pattachitra" comes from the Sanskrit word Patta which stands for canvas or chitra. It is a painting done on canvas with rich and colourful motifs and designs. These paintings showcase simple themes, mostly mythological characters.
Kandarpa Hasti, also known as Navanarikunjara, is inspired by the Krishna Leela. It depicts nine Gopis, or unmarried women, who are intertwined with each other in such a way that they form an elephant. Sometimes, it is just a single elephant, but usually, Lord Krishna is seen on the top of the elephant with a flute.
